Dharamshala region was shaken by multiple earthquakes; No damage reported

“A series of earthquakes, including a strong tremor measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, shook the Dharamshala district of Himachal Pradesh, triggering panic among residents, though no loss of life or major damage to property was reported,” officials said on Saturday (June 6, 2026).

“Earthquakes struck the region on June 5. The strongest quake occurred at 10.04 pm, with its epicenter located about 40 km from Dharamshala, between Dar Ghadwi and the preserved Kogti forests in the Dhauladhar mountain ranges along the Kangra-Chamba border,” they said.

The quake occurred at a depth of 22.5 km and the short tremor was felt across Kangra, Chamba and adjoining areas. Residents reported a strong tremor, and many rushed out of their homes as a precaution. The seismic activity had begun earlier today. At 8.52 am, a mild earthquake of 2.3 magnitude was recorded near Minkiani Pass in the Dhauladhar mountain range, about 16 km from Dharamshala. The tremor was too weak to be felt by most residents.

Following the 5.0 magnitude earthquake, two more tremors were recorded later in the night. A magnitude 2.8 earthquake occurred at 11.03 pm about 18 km from Dharamshala, followed by a 3.0 magnitude earthquake at 11.52 pm near Reserve Forest (RF) Helang, about 23 km from the city.

Kangra district, where Dharamshala is located, falls under seismic zone 5, the highest earthquake risk category in India. Earthquakes of magnitude 3 to 4 are generally considered minor and rarely cause structural damage, although they are often felt by residents.

According to seismologists, frequent low-intensity earthquakes in the geologically emerging Himalayan region may help release tectonic stress built up along fault lines. However, experts warn that such activity does not rule out the possibility of a major earthquake in the future.

The earthquakes revived memories of the devastating Kangra earthquake that occurred in 1905, one of the deadliest earthquakes in Indian history. The earthquake, whose magnitude was estimated at 7.8, killed more than 20,000 people and destroyed more than 100,000 buildings throughout the region.
