The Black River area in Missouri records an earthquake Saturday

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Madrid’s new bug finds a way to surprise you. It happened Saturday morning when the US Geological Survey confirmed an earthquake strong enough to be felt directly beneath the Black River in Missouri.

According to the USGS, this earthquake occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 6 at approximately 2:37 AM. It was a 2.4 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter almost directly beneath the Black River in southern Missouri. It was very close to Markham Spring Recreation Area in the Mark Twain National Forest.

While the 2.4 magnitude quake is nowhere near strong enough to cause any damage, it is strong enough to be felt, but the fact that the earthquake early Saturday happened in a very remote area with no one nearby (other than maybe a few campers) is the reason the USGS has no felt reports as of this writing.

There’s something like a foreshock before a big earthquake, but there’s no way to know if minor quakes like the one under Black River mean a larger quake in New Madrid will follow. Is that possible? certainly. Is it likely? no. The location of this Saturday’s earthquake is not the typical location we see in the heel of Missouri’s boot frequently, but there have been several small earthquakes near Lake Wapabilo recently.

The USGS says there is about a 25% to 40% chance that an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 or greater will occur in the New Madrid Seismic Zone within the next 50 years. This is a significant enough risk that having an emergency plan is vital because this type of devastating and large earthquake would likely give no warning before it strikes. Let’s hope that doesn’t become a reality anytime soon.
