An earthquake hits the Philippines. Watch the video, photos of the destruction

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines turns buildings into rubble

At least 32 people are feared dead following a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the Philippines, officials said. Large aftershocks were also reported.

At least 32 people are believed to have died and dozens injured when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines.

The quake occurred just before 7:40 a.m. local time on Monday, June 8, off the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, according to the US Embassy in the Philippines. The earthquake triggered multiple tsunami warnings in several countries and officials expected the first tsunami waves to arrive between 7:37 a.m. and 9:37 a.m.

“These waves may last for hours,” the US Embassy in the Philippines wrote, adding that a tsunami warning had been issued in nine areas, including Sarangani, Davao Occidental and Pasila.

Residents of coastal areas were asked to evacuate their homes and move to higher areas. Six hours later, tsunami warnings were canceled for the southern Philippines, northern Indonesia and the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo.

The Philippines and Indonesia are located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an active horseshoe-shaped region around the Pacific Ocean. It extends “from the southern tip of South America, along the west coast of North America, through the Bering Strait, all the way to Japan and into New Zealand,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Reuters reported that officials in the Philippines sent military and disaster response teams to verify initial reports of deaths and injuries, including 32 people killed and 134 others injured across Mindanao. According to Reuters, most of the injuries came from falling debris and landslides.

This week’s earthquake comes about eight months after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck near the Philippines in October, followed by a second earthquake on the same day. Authorities said at least seven people were killed.

The initial earthquake struck offshore Davao Oriental province in the southern Philippines at 9:45 AM local time on October 10, and was followed by the second earthquake at approximately 7:12 PM that day.

President deploys disaster response

After Monday’s earthquake, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a response to the Mindanao disaster, including relief supplies and evacuation centers, as well as possible rescue operations.

He said in a press statement, “The (Ministry of Social Welfare and Development) is ready to assess the damage to roads, bridges and vital infrastructure, and to pave the necessary roads for rescue and relief operations.”

Reuters reported that the earthquake occurred while students were returning to school after the break. According to the president’s office, social media posts showed students trying to get to safety during a flag-raising ceremony Monday morning. Videos also showed vehicles stuck under damaged buildings and debris.

Marcos has suspended classes at all levels in affected areas in Mindanao until further notice.

He added: “The safety of our children comes first.” “To Kababayan residents in affected provinces, please heed the tsunami warning. Move to higher ground now. Don’t wait. Your lives are more important than anything they leave behind.”
