A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey.

Agency data show that the quake occurred at 2 p.m. in the east, about 65 miles northwest of Mantua, Cuba.

There were no immediate reports of widespread damage, although mild shaking was reported as far away as southern Florida and Cancun, Mexico, according to the US Geological Survey. In Miami, city officials said in a statement that people “in several areas” made calls to emergency services, but no injuries or major damage were reported. Metrorail trains in Miami were briefly halted, and the county’s emergency department said some buildings were evacuated “out of an abundance of caution.”

Jochen Braunmiller, an assistant professor at the University of South Florida who studies earthquakes, said he initially did not believe reports of an earthquake because they were relatively rare in the area and had not been felt.

“It’s very unfortunate,” he said. “I mean, I’m a seismologist, but I don’t seem to be very sensitive to vibration.”

But he said his close colleagues did. “People in our building in Tampa — 400 or 300 miles or so from the epicenter — felt it,” he said.

The quake was among the strongest recorded in the Gulf of Mexico in the past 100 years, according to USGS records. Unlike California, where earthquakes are often caused by fault lines between tectonic plates, earthquakes are not common in the Gulf of Mexico because they occur within tectonic plates, Brownmiller said.

As seismologists review available data, they may revise the magnitude of the reported earthquake. Additional information collected about the quake may also prompt USGS scientists to update the tremor intensity map.
