At 7:37 a.m. on June 8, 2026, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck approximately 32 km south of 04 magnitude W of Maasim, Sarangani, at a depth of 33 km, affecting several areas in Mindanao. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the strongest earthquake of intensity 7 (destructive) in General Santos City, with aftershocks expected and damage reported.

DOST-PHIVOLCS issued Tsunami Information No. 1 dated June 08, 2026 at 7:37 AM, warning that coastal areas may experience tsunami wave heights of more than 1 meter above normal tide levels, which may be higher in enclosed bays and straits. Communities in Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, and South Cotabato have been strongly advised to evacuate immediately to safer areas.

Based on reports from PRC branches, numerous structural damages have been recorded. A total of two (2) buildings completely collapsed in North Cotabato and General Santos City; Four (4) buildings were severely damaged in General Santos City, Davao City, and Sarangani; Two (2) additional buildings collapsed in General Santos City; Four (4) buildings sustained minor damage in Davao Oriental and Davao City; One (1) incident of falling debris was reported in Davao del Sur. Damaged buildings included municipal halls, gymnasiums and commercial establishments.

A total of four (4) hospitals in Davao Oriental, South Cotabato and General Santos City were also affected, resulting in minor to visible cracks and structural damage.

Additionally, five (5) schools were reported damaged in Davao del Sur, General Santos City and South Cotabato.

Landslides were also reported in three (3) municipalities in South Cotabato.

Following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Sarangani, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in affected areas in Mindanao until further notice.

General Santos City declared a state of disaster.

As of the latest PHIVOLCS report released today, a total of 1,055 aftershocks have been recorded following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Sarangani. Of these, 301 aftershocks were planned/located, while 21 aftershocks were felt by residents in the affected areas. The strength of the recorded aftershocks ranged between 1.3 and 6.7 magnitude.
