Philippines grapples with rising earthquake damage and deaths

The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern island of Mindanao on Monday has risen to 45 as of early Wednesday morning, with 17 people missing and more than 30,000 people displaced, Philippine authorities said.

A crew from NHK went to General Santos, a city in southern Mindanao near the epicenter, to get the story on the ground.

Earthquake damage

Severe damage was reported in Mindanao including collapsed buildings. The Japan Meteorological Agency said on Tuesday that it had reduced the earthquake’s magnitude to 7.7 from 8.2 as a result of the analysis.

Local authorities say that more than 30,000 people have been displaced and about 2,500 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged. There were also reports of damage to electrical and communications infrastructure.

One of the rescue teams was working in an area where there was a supermarket. The three-story building collapsed, killing one person.

The families of the missing people looked on with concern.

“It hurts,” one of the men said. “I will keep waiting here until my father is found.”

A woman said her nephew was missing. She added: “I am grateful to the rescue team. They are working hard in the intense heat.”

The NHK crew entered General Santos City on Tuesday.

Some buildings in the city center collapsed completely. Others are still standing, but leaning forward dangerously.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, more than 1,100 earthquakes have been recorded in southern Mindanao as of Tuesday morning.
