Hawaii Volcano Observatory Information Statement

On Tuesday, June 9, at 10:37 PM GMT, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake occurred 14 miles (23 km) east of Papaikou on the island of Hawaii at a depth of 24 miles (39 km) below sea level. The earthquake had no apparent impact on the Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes.

The depth and location of the earthquake and the recorded seismic waves indicate a source due to the bending of the Pacific plate from the weight of the Hawaiian island chain, which is a common source of earthquakes in this region. These earthquakes are generated beneath volcanoes and ocean crust in the upper mantle beneath the Hawaiian Islands. Today’s earthquake is similar in origin but unrelated to the magnitude 6 earthquake that occurred on May 22 and the magnitude 4.6 earthquake that occurred on June 2 on the west side of the island. All of these earthquakes were likely related to pressure from the weight of the island on the underlying solid mantle and were not directly related to volcanic processes or magma movement. A slight tremor was reported during this event, which is not expected to cause damage. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor volcanoes in Hawaii for any changes.
