Overnight satellite data shows an overview of the areas affected by the earthquake

(June 11, 2026, Quezon City) The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) is currently analyzing available satellite data on the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8, 2026.

Differences in nighttime satellite images from June 8 at 1:30 a.m. and June 9 at 1:12 a.m. show areas of less nighttime light. Changes in nighttime illumination provide a way to quickly assess damage and disruption and recover after disasters. When the lights go out, it often indicates a power outage, infrastructure damage, or population displacement/evacuation.

This preliminary analysis provides an indication of where the greatest damage is occurring based on the absence of light during the night. Barangays Labangal, Abobong, San Isidro, City Heights, and the coastal barangays of Sigil and Templar in General Santos City (722,059 inhabitants based on the 2024 PSA census); The coastal municipalities of Maasim (67,907 inhabitants) and Jalan (117,017 inhabitants) in Sarangani; Polomolok, South Cotabato (population 176,671) are some of the areas that showed a decrease in nighttime illumination based on visual comparison.

PhilSA is working to refine and improve this analysis in order to identify affected areas. The return of night lights can also be used as an alternative to monitor reconstruction and recovery.
