UN Women: The effects of the earthquake and border conflict push women in Afghanistan to the brink of the abyss

Women and girls in eastern Afghanistan face dire humanitarian conditions in the wake of the 2025 earthquake and the resumption of hostilities between Pakistan and the Taliban, UN Women says.

The organization reported on Thursday, June 11, that the escalating conflict along the Afghan-Pakistani border, including airstrikes, shelling, drone attacks and ground clashes, has caused mass displacement across eastern Afghanistan.

UN Women reported that more than 100,000 people were displaced as a result of these events.

The organization added that women and girls, who are already subject to increasing restrictions on their freedom and movement under Taliban rule, are now facing the dire consequences of insecurity and successive crises.

The United Nations has warned that nearly 50,000 people in affected areas are at risk of increased gender-based violence, and women’s access to health care and basic services has been severely restricted.

UN Women stressed that pregnant women in these circumstances face increased risks, including hunger and lack of medical care, and that there is an urgent need for humanitarian support.
