One person was killed and 4 others injured after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Chinese city of Qinghai

BEIJING — A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northwest China’s Qinghai Province on Tuesday, killing at least one person and injuring four, as rescuers rushed to the site searching for trapped survivors.

The China Earthquake Networks Center said the quake struck a high-altitude area in Qinghai’s Haixi County at a depth of 10 kilometers at 5:06 pm Beijing time (0906 GMT) on Tuesday.

Local newspaper Qinghai Daily said late Tuesday that preliminary examinations showed that transmission, communications, water and electricity lines within 50 kilometers of the epicenter were operating normally.

About 320 people are now deployed for the search, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

State media reported earlier that all workers in coal mines near the epicenter had been evacuated, and authorities were assessing losses and property damage.

The earthquake was followed by more than a dozen aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 4.9.

The authorities sent tents, beds and blankets to the areas affected by the earthquake and assigned companies and charities to provide food and water to the affected residents.

The epicenter of the quake was near Da Caidam, home to the mineral-rich Emerald Lake, a popular stop on the Qinghai-Gansu tourist route.
