Editorial: St. Charles in central Oregon needs help preparing for earthquakes

Dr. Steve Gordon, president and CEO of St. Charles, made a plea Monday that we hope the state government will take action on this.
One of the worst natural disasters to come to Oregon is an earthquake that devastates the coast. The Cascadia subduction zone extends along the coast about 70 miles offshore. An earthquake struck in 1700 with an estimated magnitude of 9.0. The expectation is that another one of this magnitude will come one day.
Bridges and communications along the coast are likely to be destroyed. Few buildings made of stone will survive. Oregon Emergency Management says a tsunami could hit the coast at a height of 100 feet.
Central Oregon will be a focal point for the state’s response through CORE3, the Multi-Agency Response Center, and the Redmond Airport.
St. Charles hospitals also need help planning for a surge in patients in the event of an earthquake disaster, Gordon said.
“Not only the acute experience of a major disaster but more importantly what do we want to plan for in terms of relocating populations and relocating infrastructure… after the Cascadia event?” He told Gov. Tina Kotick’s Central Oregon Regional Solutions. “And we don’t know where to start on that.”
St. Charles in Bend is already planning for the future. The campus is 50 years old. They need to be renovated and/or replaced within the next 25 years and add capacity by up to two-thirds. This is to suit the expected growth of the region and the aging population. Any estimate of the capacity St. Charles will need after the earthquake is just a guess. It requires sophisticated guesswork. Getting this guess from St. Charles should be part of disaster planning in Oregon. When can a state submit?

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
