Damage assessments are underway following the M6.0 Hawaii Island earthquake

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – State and county federal officials are assessing damage from last month’s Kona earthquake on Hawaii Island.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency and Hawaii County are conducting a joint preliminary damage assessment following the 6.0 magnitude earthquake that struck May 22 near Honaunau-Napopu on the west side of Mauna Loa.

The assessment will help validate reports of damage to homes, infrastructure and community systems, and determine whether federal disaster assistance may be warranted, officials said.

The earthquake caused numerous road closures and landslides, including along Highway 11 between Captain Cook and Ocean View, as well as Nabobo Road in Captain Cook.

Initial reports from Hawaii County indicate damage to residential buildings, water collection systems and public facilities. Some of the hardest-hit communities may have recovery needs that exceed local capabilities, county officials said.

“HIEMA is working closely with FEMA and the County of Hawaii to document the full extent of the damage and ensure the impacts on our communities are clearly understood,” said HIEMA Director James Barros. “This assessment helps inform recovery decisions and ensures we are advocating for the support communities may need.”

Assessment teams will work with county staff to review affected areas, verify field reports, and gather information needed to support recovery planning.

Officials noted that the initial joint damage assessment does not automatically trigger a federal disaster declaration, but is an important step in determining whether additional assistance can be provided.

Residents and businesses in affected areas are encouraged to continue reporting residential and commercial damage through Hawaii County’s established reporting process as recovery efforts continue.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
