A 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook the Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie and Côte Nord regions on Thursday morning.

According to the Canadian Earthquake Service, the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 10:21 a.m., was located 25 kilometers northeast of Mont Joli, Que., in the St. Lawrence River.

It has been felt as far away as Rivière-du-Loup, Rimouski, Baie-de-Chaleur, Baie-Comeau and Sept-Ile.

In a Facebook post, the city of Matan said no damage had been reported and added that its teams were trained and prepared.

CLSC Matane was evacuated as a precaution, but everyone re-entered the building, according to Santé Québec Bas-Saint-Laurent.

Experts say moderate earthquakes are not common in the region

Every year, about 450 earthquakes occur in the eastern part of the country. Of that number, four tremors averaged above magnitude 4.0, according to Earthquakes Canada.

The Lower St. Lawrence is considered a moderate earthquake zone, says Christopher Boucher, a seismic analyst with Natural Resources Canada.

He said that along the St. Lawrence River and into the Ottawa Valley, it is an area where hundreds of millions of years ago two tectonic plates began to separate before the process stopped.

“This created really ancient faults, deep faults that could reactivate at any moment and cause the earthquakes we feel today,” he said.

In general, he says they record less powerful earthquakes in the area every day.

Boucher said the impact of this type of earthquake depends on how close a person is and what type of soil they are standing on, but people can expect five to 10 seconds of shaking, or a swaying motion back and forth.

“I certainly wouldn’t call it a rumor,” he said.

He added that the last earthquake of this strength in the same region was in 1999, south of September.

He encourages anyone who felt the quake to fill out a form on the Earthquakes Canada webpage.
