Pope Francis prays for the victims of Covid-19

Pope Francis directs his thoughts and prayers to the victims of the new Corona virus, and recalls the fourth anniversary of a deadly earthquake in central Italy.

“Let’s not forget the victims of the Coronavirus.”

Pope Francis made the invitation on Sunday after reciting the Angelus prayer.

He was welcoming pilgrims from the Italian province of Bergamo, who had arrived in Rome to commemorate the COVID-19 victims.

The Pope added that he had just heard the story of a family who lost their grandparents on the same day without being able to bid them farewell.

He said, “There is a lot of suffering.” Many people have lost their lives and fall victim to this disease. Many of the volunteers, doctors, nurses, nuns and priests also died. ”

He urged everyone to pray for families suffering in similar circumstances.

Anniversary of the earthquake in Italy

Pope Francis also noted the fourth anniversary of a massive earthquake that struck central Italy on August 24.

The magnitude 6.2 earthquake killed nearly 300 people in the central regions of Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzo and Marche.

The Pope said: “I renew my prayers for the families and communities that have withstood the worst damage, so that they can move forward in solidarity and hope.”

He then expressed his hope that “reconstruction efforts will accelerate, so that people can continue to live peacefully in these beautiful areas of the Apennine Mountains.”

The troubled prayer of Cabo Delgado

On Sunday, Pope Francis expressed his closeness to the residents of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique.

He said many people there were suffering “because of international terrorism.”

He said, “I do so while I clearly remember my visit to that nation about a year ago.”

The province of Cabo Delgado witnessed a violent rebellion, which was responded to by jihadist militants linked to the so-called Islamic State.

Pope Francis spoke earlier this week with Bishop Fernando Lisboa of Pemba, about the situation in northern Mozambique.
