The Cadia gold mine has been temporarily halted after two earthquakes in western New South Wales

Two earthquakes have rocked parts of western New South Wales, with underground operations at one of the country’s largest gold mines temporarily halted for the second time in nine weeks.

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded inside the Newmont Cadia gold mine site, south of Orange, at approximately 5:45 a.m.

All underground workers “were safely returned to the surface, and no injuries were reported,” Newmont said in a statement.

Inspections are conducted on site.

The Australian Geosciences Authority says 100 people from areas including Orange, Millthorpe, Blayney and Oberon reported feeling the quake, which occurred one kilometer underground.

Blayneyshire Mayor Bruce Reynolds, who lives 12 kilometers from the epicenter, was watching breakfast on TV at the time.

Cr Reynolds said the quake lasted for about five seconds.

“It was like a truck coming at you, but a very big truck,” he said.

Earlier, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded northwest of Wilcannia at around 3:20 am.

Only two people reported feeling the quake, which was detected by a remote station near Motaintji National Park.

The Midwestern quake came just two months after underground operations at the Cadia mine site were suspended for five weeks after a 4.5-magnitude quake trapped employees in underground shelter rooms for more than 10 hours.

The April 14 earthquake was the largest ever seen in the Orange region and was felt as far away as Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong.

Before that, the previous record was a 4.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the Orange Region in 2017, which also prompted a precautionary evacuation of Cadia and halted operations for several months.

Cr Reynolds said today’s earthquake was not as strong as the previous one.

He said: “We are experienced in dealing with earthquakes, and the magnitude of large earthquakes of 4.5 magnitude was five to ten times more violent. The house suddenly shook.”
