UK charities launch earthquake appeal in Venezuela

The UK Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) has launched an appeal to help thousands of people injured and displaced by the two powerful earthquakes that hit Venezuela.

15 British relief agencies, including the British Red Cross, Oxfam and Save the Children, have come together to ask the public to donate.

More than 1,700 people have been killed since the quakes struck within seconds of each other last Wednesday, a number the United Nations said would rise “inevitably.” It is believed that tens of thousands of people are still missing.

The charities said the money was needed to deliver aid to survivors who were “in dire need of shelter, food and water.”

Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, described the earthquakes as “the most brutal natural disaster” in the country’s history.

At least 5,000 people have been injured since the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck near the capital, Caracas, reducing hundreds of buildings to rubble and prompting officials to declare a state of emergency.

Hospitals have been overwhelmed with shortages of vital supplies and demand for aid has surged among those left homeless.

About 2,500 buildings were affected, most of which collapsed completely, according to the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Venezuela.

Several countries, including the UK, have deployed search and rescue teams to try to reach survivors, as well as medical and humanitarian workers.

In some devastated areas, residents have been left to conduct much of the searching themselves in the absence of significant government support.

Both the United Nations and the US Geological Survey expected the death toll to reach 10,000 people.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the money raised by the government would be matched by up to £2 million.

She added: “The people of Venezuela are in dire need of urgent humanitarian support from all over the world.”

DEC, External brings 15 of the UK’s leading charities together to provide and deliver aid.

The appeal will be broadcast on the BBC and other media on Wednesday.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
