Dodgers rookie Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. found dead following Venezuela earthquakes before making his MLB debut

The sister and stepmother of Dodgers outfielder Eliezer Alfonzo Jr., who was called up to the team from the minor leagues on Saturday, were found dead Sunday in Venezuela. This news came just hours before Alfonzo was set to make his MLB debut.

Alfonzo’s sister, Eliana, 16, and her stepmother, Patricia, were missing for more than a week after the two massive earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. The two were found dead on Sunday in La Guaira, according to El Extrabase’s Daniel Alvarez Montes.

Alfonzo’s father, Eliezer Sr., was searching for them in the ruins of the hotel they were staying at when the twin quakes struck, and reportedly secured heavy machinery to assist rescue crews. This equipment even helped find Eliana’s dog, which was alive, on Friday. Patricia’s cell phone was also found.

Eliezer Sr. was staying with his family at the hotel before the earthquakes, but left to manage the Delfines de la Guaira team. He spent six seasons in the MLB playing for the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and Colorado Rockies. He said he was not sure if they had left the room before the earthquakes struck.

The first earthquake struck at 6:04 pm on June 24 with a magnitude of 7.2 near San Felipe. Just one minute later, a second 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck nearby. More than 2,900 people have died as of Saturday, according to The New York Times, and nearly 16,600 people have been infected.

Eliezer Jr. is in his 10th season in minor league baseball, and is now reaching the major leagues at the age of 26. He began his career as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers in 2016, reaching Triple-A last season. He elected free agency last offseason and inked a minor league deal with the Dodgers. He has a .313 batting average with the Oklahoma City Comets so far this season.
