A Vegas-based historical collection branching out to the north

ELKO, Nevada (AP) – A nonprofit historical preservation group recently added several northern Nevada projects to its portfolio, including the Basque Hotel in Elko and the Casino Hotel in Wells.

“We started out in Las Vegas with me in my back bedroom at a desk,” said Heidi Swank, executive director of the Nevada Preservation Foundation, which she founded in 2013.

“One day I decided I was a nonprofit. Now we have four employees in Vegas and our new intern, Shayla Zaga, from Great Basin College.”

Swank said the group helps people determine what they would like to do with their historic buildings and find the way to get there.

“We are advising and fundraising (about projects),” Swank said, referring to a project in Virginia to restore St Paul’s Church. “When they came to us, they got two federal grants. We administer those grants and we got them an additional grant.”

We are in the process of launching a fundraising campaign this fall. She said that the total amount will be about $ 1 million for one restoration of the excavated St. Paul. We believe in ourselves that we are the “old building scouts.”

Besides preserving the historical heritage, the nonprofit also works to promote tourism in Nevada communities.

Zaga, who plans to graduate from Great Basin College in 2021 and hopes to teach history in the region, is a third-generation Elko residing in Basque ancestry. She also works for The Star and does live tours of the top floor of the building, which was a traditional home for the basque. She said her grandmother was born upstairs.

Zaga hopes to be able to make the rounds in December. Through the Nevada Preservation Foundation, it also documents homes in Elko to create a brief source for local information.

“I created a small map of the houses that I was recording. It’s a big project and I’m still learning how to discover the different architecture, materials and methods used,” she said.

This is the kind of information that needs to be gathered before the neighborhood is designated as a Historic District, Swank said.

Ultimately, Zagha ​​said, the organization may want to organize historical tours of the house.

Besides Elko, Swank and other members of the foundation are working on other projects in northeastern Nevada, including a building in Battle Mountain and El Rancho Hotel and Casino in Wales.

According to the foundation’s website, The El Rancho is at the heart of what historians know as the “Northeastern Nevada border”. The building survived an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 in 2008. It remains one of the last historic hotel casino buildings in the community.

The hotel was built in 1949 by Italian immigrant and businessman Leo Quilici. It was the first hotel in Wales to use steel constructions and electricity. The area’s farm and railway business brought workers to Wells on the weekends, and El Rancho was a popular gathering destination.

“We list El Rancho on the National Register of Historic Places,” said Swank. “It’s nice to see it coming back. We have also provided the city with advice on sourcing materials, what to keep and what to give up. The important thing is that we need to remove the hallway in front of the building in order to register with the National Registry.”
