A 7.3-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Guatemala and El Salvador on Friday, according to preliminary reports from the US Geological Survey.

The tremor was reported at 8:48 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located 48 kilometers off the coast of Aquiles Cerdán, Chiapas, Mexico. The earthquake was reported near the Pacific coast of Mexico, near the border of neighboring Guatemala and El Salvador. A tsunami threat has also been issued for coastal areas in Mexico and Guatemala, according to the US Tsunami Warning System.

Direct Relief has staff based in Mexico and is monitoring for any potential medical needs. The organization has extensive experience in responding to earthquakes in the region, and continues to respond to the earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month.
