Panorama investigation: Detainees arrested in Iran – BBC News

Anoosheh Ashoori was arrested in Iran in 2017 and sentenced to 10 years in prison after the Iranian government accused him of espionage, denying the charges. He is one of eight well-known British nationals who have been arrested and detained in Iran in recent years. In that number is Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has been convicted of baseless espionage charges. Nizar Zakkar is a Lebanese businessman and U.S. resident who spent four years in the same prison on similar charges. The U.S. government has claimed that such arrests were taken as a result of the bailouts, a denial denied by Iran. The BBC’s Darragh MacIntyre is investigating these arrests and suggestions suggest there may be more British citizens in similar situations.
