Climber says Chiswick’s car crash brought back the Nepal earthquake shock of ‘shaking like a doll’
A South Chiswick resident who was the first to show up at the scene of a serious car accident in an “aggressive rat race” said the work to calm traffic “dramatically improved” the area.
Mark Campbell, who lives on Sutton Court Street, said walking around the neighborhood has become “less threatening” and “more friendly” in the past few weeks as Hounslow Council has been experimenting with ways to lower traffic levels in certain parts of town.
Mark – who used to move to Square Mile before working from home during the coronavirus pandemic – said the area has had its “fair share” of serious accidents.

“Over the years, I have arrived early on the scene of three accidents at the intersection of Fauconberg Road and Sutton Court Road, which involved car caps,” he said.
“On one of these, on a quiet Sunday evening in early 2016, peace shattered at the left highway to the Fauconberg Road.”
Mark believed two cars had collided and called 999
Ambulance crews asked him to look inside the car and see a woman trapped in one of it.
He said, “I just survived the 2015 Nepal earthquake at an altitude of 5,000 meters.
“It felt like a massive explosion like a helicopter had crashed next to me, and my call to emergency services brought back all memories of my minute episode in Nepal.”
Mark was traveling 5,000 meters above Mount Cannes near the epicenter of the devastating earthquake in 2015 that killed nearly 9,000 people.
He remembers being “shook like a doll” and the crashing noise around him.
On the impact on his mental health, he said: “I was looking at the buildings and feeling that they would collapse on top of me.
“If I hear a vibration that makes me very nervous. This accident was within that window of experience, in just nine months.”
In a devastating accident on the same road in 2010, a 17-year-old boy was killed after the car he was driving collided with the rear of a parked car after a police chase at high speed.
Witnesses said that the car believed to be stolen was traveling at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour as the police were following it down the narrow street.
Since the Fauconberg road accident in 2016, Mark says work has been done to calm a dangerous turn, but he welcomes new plans to stop auto racing across the region.
It is also believed to depart from the “car is king” mentality and create a more balance between drivers and other road users.
He said, “What I see is a much better reflection of this balance. We are all residents and we all deserve to be taken into account in these plans.”
The council had secured funding from the mayor of London last year to transform the area as part of a “ liveable neighborhood ” scheme, but government directives to authorities in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic have accelerated the process to make South Chiswick a “ low traffic. ” Neighborhood’.
This means preventing drivers from using residential streets to breach major roads, by blocking streets and changing access to the lower traffic speeds and volumes in the area.
It is also hoped to encourage more active travel for residents to enhance health and environmental benefits.
The scheme has also attracted criticism for the “mess” of the road from the changes, but Mark believes it is part of the “silent majority” that believes the move is for the better.
He said, “Until now, my neighborhood – the narrow lane from Sutton Court Road to Harvard Hill – has been an aggressive ‘rat race’ for traffic coming across Chiswick Bridge (A306) and taking a series of shortcuts across the residential communities of Grove Park, Fauconberg Road and Harvard Hill for quick access to A4.
Our narrow roads are not designed for this.
“The Fauconberg Road area became an immediate beneficiary of reduced noise and traffic.”
Meanwhile, opposition continued from Chiswick Riverside Council members who warned that the measures threaten “to turn southern Chiswick into an uninhabitable neighborhood for many residents”.

The Conservative Party members wrote to House Leader Steve Curran earlier this month urging him to intervene on implementing the measures.
Cllr Gabriella Giles said: “As I said before, we, Chiswick Riverside residents, advisors and the Hounslow Council, all agree that the primary goals of a livable neighborhood are to improve road safety and air quality and reduce car use in the local area is vital to creating a safer neighborhood.
“ However, with Covid-19, the council is using the government’s legal guidance cover to rush through measures without pre-agreed engagement, consultation and options that would form part of a proper process, and to make sure what is being implemented works for all the residents, not half-hearted, rushing Through designs that aren’t executed properly, or even passed their own safety audits. ”
