Kalgoorlie-Boulder earthquake wakes hundreds of residents in night hell

Geoscience Australia says the 3.1-magnitude earthquake near the Western Australian mining town in Kalgoorlie Boulder this morning was geologically “shallow”, but “violent” enough to knock residents out of their sleep.

Key points: A 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Kalgoorlie Boulder at around 3.15 am, waking up many residents, and this was the seventh earthquake recorded by Australian geosciences this year, this year marks 10 years since Kalgoorlie struck Boulder with a powerful earthquake 5.0 degrees.

Locals took to social media after the earthquake – the seventh to hit the seismically active Goldfields this year – woke them up at around 3.15 am.

The earthquake was recorded at 11 different stations by Geoscience Australia, including Mundaring, over 500 km away.

The epicenter, which was about five kilometers below the surface, was northwest of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in an area close to underground mines, including the Raleigh Gold Mine, which closed in April due to a major seismic event.

ABC contacted several mining companies in the area but received no reports of injuries or damages.

Chief seismologist, Hugh Glanville, said Geoscience Australia received more than 325 reports within just two hours from residents who felt the earthquake in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, as well as in the nearby town of Kampalda.

Mr Glanville said the seven earthquakes recorded in the region this year varied in magnitude, from 3.5 to 2.6.

“It was about 5 kilometers deep, so it is very shallow, and it was widely felt in the area,” he said.

“When an earthquake is shallow in the crust, the shaking is often more violent because it travels through fewer rocks before it reaches people.

“The shock waves travel into the air because they are moving so fast, and you’ll hear a boom and a roar.”

A decade since the earthquake struck 5.0

This year marks 10 years since the Kalgoorlie destroyed Boulder by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake and caused millions of dollars in damage.

Glanville said the difference in size was significant.

“Between the earthquake that hit us this morning and the one in 2010, there will be 100 times the difference in vibration,” he said.

In June, an earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale struck 10 km from the Canona Bell Gold Mine near Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

It caused a rock to fall into a mine 1.3 kilometers deep.

The workers were evacuated and no one was injured.
