San Jose Earthquakes resume Major League Soccer against Portland Timbers
San Jose – The San Jose Earthquakes will resume the regular season of their Major League Soccer abbreviation tonight against Portland Timbers as a test case for Santa Clara County.
The game at Earthquakes Stadium is the first professional sporting event in the county since the novel coronavirus pandemic forced the closure of many activities 5 and a half months ago. Earthquakes (2-1-2, eight points) also have home matches on September 5 and September 13 with more to come when MLS tops the rest of their schedule. All events are held in San Jose without an audience.
Earthquakes chief operations officer Jared Shole said the team managers teamed up with 49ers, sharks and area colleges to write a 100-page play-day safety guide approved by county public health officials.
Shauli said the team is expected to have 232 people or fewer in the stadium, including players, coaching staff, team executives, gaming operations staff and the media.
“We think we’ve put together something good and hope if some other industries can use the protocols as well,” he said.
The last time earthquakes took place on the homeland was on 7 March in front of an declared crowd of 12,223 people. Major League Soccer suspended the regular season after five days.
In a statement issued to this news organization, Santa Clara County said health officials reviewed seismic and COVID-19 49ers safety protocols and “worked with both teams to protect the general community from potential exposure to any infected player or team crew.”
Here are the five parts of the plan that officials should monitor closely:
Tests
The plan resembles an MLS official who used to run a successful World Cup-like tournament earlier this summer in Florida. It has three layers.
Level 1 includes players, coaches, medical staff, and anyone else in close contact with them. They receive what is known as a PCR test, which is a molecular examination of the nose, throat or saliva that detects the genetic material of the virus, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. This kit is tested within 48 hours prior to the games. They are also tested every day.
The defender, Tommy Thompson, said the players would be tested while driving to the facility. “It’s less painful than a needle stick,” he said.
Level 2 are individuals like staff and some broadcast crew who may have little contact with anyone in Level 1. Those people who only need to get to the facility on game days must undergo a PCR test 24 hours before they arrive on the field or a point test. Fast care performed on site before the match.
Level 3 includes members of the media and some operations personnel who have no contact with anyone in Level 1.
Social distancing
According to public health guidelines, people are expected to stay at least six feet away and avoid working in groups.
The earthquakes have included some MLS procedures approved in Florida but have also implemented specific guidelines to reduce the use of interior space at their facilities, Shauli said. For example, they moved the team’s gym and exercise equipment into the lobby.
Midfielder Jackson Yoel said the players would dress up, train and then leave. “We wear masks while we are far from each other so that we are in the field,” he said. “It’s not ideal for building a culture that we want to build. But we do.”
The team also monitors the movement of players outside their homes. Players are expected to keep a record of the places they go like grocery shopping, doctor’s offices, and picking up food at restaurants.
Gameday cleaned
According to the guide, Earthquakes will undergo a deep cleaning before each match. Hygiene personnel will use the cleaning products recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The team will have a hygiene officer to guide all people in the stadium on basic hygiene measures, including hand sanitation, cough and sneeze hygiene, social distancing and hand washing. The officer will also work with the manager of the cleaning staff to create a cleaning and disinfection plan. A person will keep a record of all areas cleaned, when and with what products.
At the start of the first half, the three locker rooms (including the game’s officials room) will be cleaned and sterilized when everyone returns inside at the end of the first half.
During the break, the seats and surrounding areas where players sit will be cleaned and disinfected and the three locker rooms will be cleaned again before the game ends.
Enter the stadium
A safety plan defines how people will enter the stadium. Each person entering the facility will undergo a medical examination, according to protocols.
Players, coaches, referees and team staff will have a private entrance but will go through a similar screening process like everyone else. Also, teams and referees will be given specific arrival times to reduce the number of people entering simultaneously.
Play in the field
Officials will arrange the player’s entry onto the field and keep everyone separated by at least six feet.
The players will not be taken to the field by children. Pre-match photos and handshake are prohibited. Five photographers will be permitted to enter the stadium, but each one of them must remain in a specific area.
“We will learn from these first six matches,” said Shauli, who included the team’s three matches on the road. “The stadiums are complicated. We ask for different things from the normal businesses operating in the area.”
