Mataram, Nusa Tenggara (Antara) – An Indonesian army officer announced that 1,000 members of the Indonesian army’s engineering unit will be deployed to facilitate government efforts to build 17,000 earthquake-resistant homes in West Nusa Tenggara province.

“They are put on standby. They are in North Lombok,” 162 Military Command Commander / Weera Bhakti Resort Brigadier General. Major General Ahmed Rizal Ramdhani notified journalists in Mataram, the capital of West Nusa Tenggara Province, on Thursday.

Based on Presidential Instruction No. 7 of 2020 regarding accelerated reconstruction of people’s homes in West Nusa Tenggara earthquake disaster areas, the transition period for the 2018 Lombok earthquake has been extended until December 31, 2020.

He pointed out that, “Thanks to these presidential instructions, matters related to the funds required to rebuild the damaged homes can be accelerated,” adding that 17,000 damaged homes have not yet been rebuilt.

To this end, Ramadani spoke of directing his men in disaster areas to prepare to deploy to help in the reconstruction process.

According to West Nusa Tenggara Disaster Mitigation Agency, as of August 25, 2020, the government has distributed funds, totaling 5.681 trillion rupees, to mitigate the effects of the 2018 Lombok earthquake by implementing rehabilitation and reconstruction programs.

The deadly earthquake that shook several parts of the island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara province two years ago caused damage to several hundred homes.

Since then, the government has completed the renovation and rebuilding work of 202,831 damaged homes, while 10,909 homes are still under construction.

Earthquakes regularly hit different parts of Indonesia due to the fact that the country is located on the Pacific Belt, also known as the Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activities.

Two of the deadliest earthquakes in Indonesia over the past few years hit several areas in the provinces of West Nusa Tenggara and Central Sulawesi.

On September 28, 2018, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake followed by a tsunami that struck Palu City, Dongala, Paringi Mutong and Siji provinces in Central Sulawesi killed 2,102 people.
