Update: A 2.0 magnitude earthquake strikes near Lainsville early Tuesday News

Summit – A low-level earthquake struck the western Crawford County area early Tuesday morning, according to the US Geological Survey.

The 2.0-magnitude earthquake was detected at 5:22 a.m. Tuesday and had its epicenter located about 2.5 miles east / northeast of Linesville, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicenter of Tuesday’s earthquake was near Pine View Camplands off Shermansville Road in Summit Township.

Contacted on Wednesday, Greg Beveridge, director of the Crawford County Department of Public Safety and Allen Clark, deputy director of administration / emergency management, both said they had no reports of damage from Tuesday’s earthquake. Both said they were not aware of the Tuesday earthquake until the media contacted them on Wednesday.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 2.0-magnitude earthquake was Level III on the modified Mercalli intensity scale. It happened about 2.3 miles below the Earth’s surface, according to the US Geological Survey.

A level III earthquake usually has little intensity and no damage, but people inside may feel it noticeably, especially on the upper floors of a building. Many people don’t realize it is an earthquake because the vibrations are like passing a truck, according to the US Geological Survey.

The modified Mercalli density scale defines recognized intensity values from I, hardly or not, to XII, which is completely destructive.

The earthquake zone is part of the seismic zone of northeast Ohio that has experienced earthquakes at least moderately since the first earthquake was reported in 1823, according to the US Geological Survey. The area stretches from Cuyahoga County, Ohio, east to northwestern Pennsylvania. A devastating earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck in 1998 near Jamestown.

According to the agency, earthquakes that are too small to cause damage are felt two or three times per decade in the seismic zone in Northeast Ohio.
