“In the middle of the morning, a plane flew over and two smoke locomotives got out,” added Mr. Owen.

“I’ve heard stories that the ground basically didn’t stop shivering on the night of the earthquake.”

The air force dispatched rescue helicopters to take out the seriously wounded, while a working highway construction crew jumped to the east to work.

“And so, by late August 18th, there was a road, to some extent, that cars could take off,” Mr. Owen added.

“It took me a while to realize the significance of the disaster when surfing, for me to calm down a little.”

After just three weeks, the dreaded river created a lake more than 50 meters deep that now covers an area of ​​five miles and a third of a mile wide.

Today, tourists can stop by the Lake Earthquake Visitor Center, located 27 miles northwest of Yellowstone, to relive the terror of more than half a century ago.
