Earthquakes’ Wondolowski talks about the player’s strike causes, and the next steps

When the Milwaukee Bucks began their strike Wednesday, refusing to play an NBA playoff match against the Orlando Magic to protest persistent racial inequality and disproportionate violence against blacks in the United States, San Jose Earthquakes captain Chris Wendolowski was one of the millions who noticed.

Earthquakes were due to resume their regular season 2020 campaign on Wednesday at Earthquakes against Portland Timbers, but the club’s players have joined nine others, including Timbers, around the MLS to follow suit and strike from their matches to join a vigil.

“We were talking to the other teams and the other teams in the league, and we thought that was not true, and we felt that there was no justification for us going out,” Wondolovsky told reporters during a press conference on Thursday. “We came to the locker room and did a vote. We were talking with the Portland team before that, and you know, each team had their own decision and they had to make a decision quickly, but we wanted to know what kind of Portland is where and we talked with Jeremy Epobesi, and he said, you know, it is He’s not going to play, and he didn’t know what his team was going to take at the time. This was the information we got, and we took it to vote, unanimously vote that we wouldn’t play and when we spoke to the coach, we told the general manager, and by the time we were ready to announce it, I think That Portland [already] Announce that as well. “

During a 30-minute call, Wondolovsky spoke at length about the motives for the strike.

“When you share a locker room, when you share a place, day in and day out, and you have to fight with that person and you have to shed blood, sweat and tears with them, then you need to realize that everyone is equal and that’s a great thing.” “You learn a lot about someone’s culture, someone’s heritage, who they are, why they think a certain way, why they have become who they are, and to hear these stories empower them and that is why I think about all sports, we are able to have a melting pot of cultures and nationalities.

“There is no way I can say that I have suffered the same injustice that some of these other people have endured,” Wondolovsky continued. But I know these are my brothers too. and I know that [former Earthquakes teammates] Justin Morrow, Ike Opara with whom I spoke yesterday, I talked to him this morning, I really consider them family. These are my brothers and that is why [something worth] We fight for it and it is something we need. I think we’re in a special situation where we can have some of these eye-opening experiences that make it easier for us to make this decision but that said, it should be an easy decision. “

While systematic violence against blacks has been the focus of the protests this year, as the highest level Native Americans play in the MLS, Wondolowski was asked for his thoughts on issues affecting Aboriginal communities, providing one example.

“I think it’s something that we need to continue helping and keep highlighting. I’m all for this Black Lives Matters, I’m all for all of the social inequality that we need to keep increasing and we see it with the culture and the Native American people. Right now this is the census,” And in a lot of tribal reserves they collect the census early and where not many people will be able to vote and many Native Americans will not be able to get their census, and this affects a lot of laws, and a lot of local things that affect them in their daily lives. Will harm the affected population. “

Wondolovsky noted that he believes that nearly a quarter of Native Americans will not be counted in the census this year, in part because the census is completed earlier than originally planned, and that this will have a profound impact on the resources in those communities.

“It’s just one of the many, many microcosms of how social injustice pervades our culture and it’s sad to see. And a lot of these little things add up to the big, big things.”

Wondolowski said the Earthquakes team is planning to meet on Thursday evening before the scheduled team training, and while they do plan to train, they have not made any decisions about future matches, including the California Classico match scheduled for this weekend against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Major League Soccer scorer all-time credited the earthquake with backing the players’ decision on Wednesday.

“Earthquakes support us every step of the way, in any way, material, shape and form. They understand this movement, and they certainly have our backs in whatever way they can. This goes to property and to our front office and so they are with us.”

But Wendolovsky joined a chorus of other MLS players in condemning the league’s statement regarding the matches canceled Wednesday, with players indicating that they had chosen not to play, rather than the league opting not to play five matches at night. He also praised the league generally in support of social justice and racial equality efforts this year.

“Major League Soccer, I think they were, especially in Orlando, they wanted to be behind us. They want to be an impact as well and make a big difference and they know change is needed. They also balance the business side and I understand there’s quite another side to that.” And there are a number of aspects too but you know I thought this was a bit silent yesterday. Their statement was, you know, I think it’s imprecise on the many, many counts, either emotionally or realistically. So I was really disappointed about that but what was said , I think they supported us in many different situations and with many different experiences. Can they and us and everyone else in this do a better job? Yes of course. I think we all, and again I am bringing myself and everyone together in this. You know we need to do work Better to be able to make this change. “

The 37-year-old has previously said he will retire after this season and said he understands the personal sacrifice in play, but also indicated that if he has not played any other games in his career, he will have the “biggest smile on my face” if the pursuit of equality is .

“All players want to play. We will not like anything more than playing. It kills me, I am in the last game of my career and I am eager to go there, but this is bigger than me. This is much bigger than any of us and so this is what is needed at this time. That is why we feel that we are collective and united in this decision and why did we reach this decision.
