More than 2,500 kiwis reported feeling a 5.2-magnitude earthquake on the North Island this morning.

The quake struck 120 km northeast of Wangamata and was felt by many in the Coromandel region and in places across the North Island, including Oakland and Toranga.

GeoNet says the earthquake was at a depth of 5 km, and it struck just before 3:50 am today.

So far, 2,577 people have reported feeling shaken on GeoNet. More than 1,200 recorded that the earthquake was weak, with 1,067 reporting that it was mild and 236 moderate.

Many of those who felt shaken shared their experience on social media, with one Twitter user saying it was “the strongest earthquake I have felt in Coromandel”.

Another Wetianga resident said her entire house was “shivering and creaking” because of the earthquake, as many of her friends also felt.

Auckland residents have even reported waking up from the event, with someone posting on Twitter to say they felt it on the 12th floor of a city apartment building.
