Coronavirus: what is the worst situation in Europe? – BBC News

 



The number of people killed by coronaviruses in Italy has risen to 475 in a day to almost 3,000 – the largest increase since the outbreak.

A total of 35,713 cases have been confirmed in the country, with more than 4,000 successfully recovered.

Lombardy, in the most affected region, died in 319 in one day.

Italy is the worst affected country in the world after China since the virus emerged last year. At least 8,758 people are killed, most of them in China.

Spain now has 598 deaths and 13,716 infections. An investigation into the deaths of at least 17 residents in a Madrid nursery is underway, with dozens of cases of Covid-19 reported.

In France, the number of confirmed cases increased by more than 16% on Tuesday, while the figure rose to 7,730, with the death toll rising to 175, with 7% of those under the age of 65.

In the UK, the death toll has reached 104.

Germany has 12 deaths and 8,198 cases. In a television address, Chancellor Angela Merkel called on the Germans to comply with the pandemic’s restrictions. “Since the reunification of Germany since World War II, it has never been a challenge to play in our solidarity. It was so important,” he said.

Belgium has 14 deaths and 1,486 cases.
