North Carolina Gov. signs state disaster declaration to get additional help

Raleigh, North Carolina (STL.News) The U.S. Small Business Administration today granted a request by Northern Governor Roy Cooper to declare a disaster for homeowners and small businesses that suffered damage from a 5.1-magnitude earthquake centered near Sparta in Ghani County on August 9.

“This Small Business Administration approval will provide much-needed assistance to our homeowners and small businesses who deal with the structural damage from this powerful earthquake,” said Governor Cooper. “Additionally, I have signed a state of disaster declaration to provide state-funded assistance to those ineligible for SBA aid.”

Initial damage assessments reported that over 500 buildings were affected by the earthquake. The SBA Damage Assessment Survey confirmed that 43 buildings sustained severe damage over 40% of the building’s value, including 38 homes and 5 businesses.

The announcement authorizes low-interest, disaster-response loans for residents and businesses who have suffered losses in Ghani County and neighboring counties such as Ash, Surrey and Wilkes in North Carolina and Grayson County in Virginia. SBA Disaster Loans provides up to $ 200,000 to homeowners and up to $ 2 million to businesses to repair and / or replace damaged properties. Homeowners and renters will also be eligible for loans of up to $ 40,000 to repair or replace damaged personal property.

For those who do not meet the qualifications for a low interest SBA disaster loan, individual government assistance grants are available.

The Disaster Recovery Center will open Monday afternoon in Sparta for affected residents to apply for assistance. Residents should call (336) 372-2999, to make an appointment so that social distancing can be maintained in the recovery center.
