3 Navi and regional earthquake fault zones

This hill, Cerro la Vigia, near the town of Catemaco, in Municipio de Santiago Tuxtla, Veracruz, Mexico, has been suggested by some adherents of the Mesoamerican preparation of the Book of Mormon as the site for the final battles of Gardet and Nevit. Here are some observations from “Defining a Regional Rift Zone”, Chapter 10 by Jerry De Grover, Jr., The Geology of the Book of Mormon (2014), pp. 139-148. (See this and more of the work he and others have done on the scholarly and linguistic research site for Brother Grover’s book.) Brother Grover – who incidentally served from 1995 to 2007 as a member of the Utah County Committee – is a licensed professional structural and civil engineer and a licensed professional geologist, with an undergraduate degree in geoengineering from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Utah. He has devoted more than thirty years to the study of Book of Mormon geography and related issues.

Brother Grover asserts that “volcanic earthquakes alone cannot explain the intensity of the earthquake described in III Nephi” (139). It therefore examines potential rift areas where an earthquake might have occurred with a sufficiently large force, in order to determine which of them is the most likely site.

Based on a close examination of the relevant biblical passages, it was concluded that “there was (1) a large-scale surface tearing and fissuring in the ground towards the north, and (2)“ the plains of the earth ”had been broken” (140). It also looks at a second earthquake surface feature known as subsidence.

There are only two regional rift zones in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where Brother Grover’s research focuses on the geographic model proposed for the Book of Mormon by John L. Sorenson. One is the subduction zone of the Pacific Coast and the other is Veracruz-Polochic / Motagua-Strike-Sleep County. It is critically evident in declaring its preference:

“[T]The most favorable scenario appears to be the Veracruz-Polochic / Motagua Strike-Slip Fault movement, with the main movement occurring in the Veracruz Fault System ‘(141).

He acknowledges that the available data is not perfect:

“Defects like San Andreas in California have a wide array of data and detailed geological mapping with millions of dollars spent developing accurate models; this is not the case for the Veracruz fault or other defects in southern Mexico and Guatemala.” (142)

Nevertheless, Brother Grover is confident enough about what we know that he concludes his tenth chapter as follows:

“The Veracruz Fault Fragment fulfills all the necessary conditions set forth in the Book of Mormon as a basic system for earthquake rust. It is a slip crack, which usually generates surface rupture, fractures, and subsidence. It is located in the ground towards the north where the worst damage occurred. Part of the fault portion falls. In the land towards the south and may cause damage to the land towards the south, it is located on the coastal plains and their vicinity, and it occurs in areas that had a large population at that time.

Veracruz error system also meets most of the preferential conditions. It has a large volcano that sits directly on the rift system, San Martin Volcano. It occurs within parts of Bountiful Land. Part of the fault system lies underwater in the Gulf of Mexico and can generate tsunamis. Likely to cause landing impacts in Moroni. There are major rivers and some lakes and lakes on or near the fault, which can quickly fill subsidence zones. . . .
