Munted: The magician of Christchurch says locals are avoiding CBD after the earthquake

This story is the second part of Munted – a seven-part video series that tells the story of the Christchurch earthquakes. Watch all seven episodes.

The magician says that after the earthquake Christchurch is a city devoid of steel and glass with “sacred bike lanes” contributing to the heart of the central city.

New Zealand magician QSM, who has lived in Christchurch since 1974, agreed to an email interview before the tenth anniversary of the first devastating earthquake in Christchurch on September 4.

After the subsequent fatal February 2011 earthquake, the magician became increasingly visible in the battles to save the Cathedral of Christ Church and other notable buildings and heritage features in Montide.

In the first episode of Munted his quote – “If you control the means of communication, you control the meaning of the word” real “- helps set the tone for the series.

Where were you and what were you doing when earthquakes struck?

In 2011, I was at home in Avonside, about to go to Cathedral Square to talk about my usual topic of free speech in a public square. Is not [his fiancee] He was at a teachers’ meeting in City Hall. I was shocked. I tried to get to her mother’s retired home but got stuck. To handle the situation for the rest of the day, we gathered in the evening.

According to reports, you left for Umaru after the 2011 earthquake but came back soon after and signed the “pledge”, in which people committed themselves to the city. Was there a decision to stay in Christchurch and make a difference?

I took Alice and her mother to our vacation home in Umaru as quickly as possible and came back a few days later and signed the pledge with my friends at the closed Carmelite monastery when the media commentators stated that I should be around to boost the spirits of the city. I immediately wrote letters to The Press expressing my concern that what was happening outside might happen here.

Things

Munted’s video series explores the social and political fallout of the Canterbury earthquake.

Panic and massive demolition of buildings, even when not severely damaged, and an opportunity for disaster capitalists to manipulate private engineers to justify unnecessary demolitions, demanding earthquake insurance and obtaining valuable land previously occupied by a heritage building or heritage street view.

I came to live in Christchurch where I was always attracted by the neo-gothic romantic movement and an aversion to cheap and bad brutal architecture. My early doctoral study was in aesthetics, I was actively curating the arts and the art gallery directors admitted me to being the only living work of art in the world.

The call to “go Gothic” in Christchurch was made after 2011. How well was the city’s Gothic heritage preserved and was the historical meaning of that architecture well understood?

Horrific losses, as predicted a few days after the 2011 earthquake; See my Save Our Souls document that I published and circulated during my daily walks outside the Canterbury Museum.

Published in March 2011, Save Our Souls said: Over the past 50 years, dozens of our historic old buildings that were to be demolished have only been rescued with the support of Christchurch City Council planners through the heroic deeds of volunteer associations of individuals, such as Christchurch Civic Trust and Save Our Arts Center.

Many other beautiful buildings have been demolished despite public protest from those who love our beautiful city. Look at the buildings that replaced them! See what happened to our beloved Cathedral Square over the past 30 years! Now a wasteland where no one is left! … Imagine the tourism potential for a truly new trend in 21st century architecture. Barcelona is another but after 100 years! Who would travel thousands of miles to see more steel and concrete boxes and acres of regular glass!

New Zealand magician addresses protest against demolition of Christ Church Cathedral in 2012.

Is it fair to say that you took on a prophetic character in those years?

Yes, as I did during the first few months after my arrival in Christchurch and I defied the daily attempts of the Christchurch City Council to arrest me for speaking on the field. I indicated that I am a postmodern prophet who uses humor to anger fundamentalist demons.

Was it taking time for you personally?

loved it.

What is your view now of the struggle for the Anglican cathedral, including your role as “a Gothic icon trying to save another”?

He was very satisfied that Bishop Victoria [Matthews] She left in anger of frustration, like the wicked witch who closely resembled her.

Now my fiancée Alice (in a chemical marriage), who was the will of the Catholic cathedral in the past, is in the thick of the battle to prevent the new Catholic bishop from rushing to demolish the Catholic cathedral on shaky legal grounds and simultaneously of great economic uncertainty. The pro cathedral works very well.

There was a fear that Christchurch would become a city devoid of steel and glass after earthquakes. Did this happen?

Yes, and the concrete restrictions on sacred bike lanes not only make the city center an unsightly place to the eye, it also makes traveling there at night really dangerous. The city is avoided by its residents.

Carmelite nuns sign a “pledge” in the monastery in 2011, looks at the magician.

We also have good shots of you at the protests to save the historic Majestic Theater. Unfortunately, the protests were unsuccessful. What was lost in that case?

An almost undamaged ballroom and theater, lots of useful offices and a beautiful Art Deco building at an important intersection in town. CERA vetoed the council, not providing information on his condition and the reason for the demolition was to widen Manchester Street by one or two meters. Then they narrowed it down!

Are you making many public appearances now or shying away?

The council has done everything in its power to hide the fact that I am in the city center most days and attacked by tourists and locals in the summer. There is no indication of my presence in promotional material for national tourism, nor in tourism in Canterbury or Christchurch. I was “canceled” but no one said why. When asked, they said that I left town or retired. Nothing to see here!

In the wings I still awaited my invitation to return to my old role as a folk meadow of the city and its heritage.

I just published a book of articles called The Fun Revolution: Jack’s Adventures in Ideologyland. Coming soon as an ebook and soon I will be making my debut on social media.
