Earthquakes of magnitude 2.7 and 4.6 magnitude were recorded in Bahia

Last Sunday (30) residents of several cities in Bahia reported that earthquakes had occurred. The Seismology Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte detected two earthquakes: the first occurred in the morning, in the municipality of Mutuebe (region of the Giquéricia Valley), and the second occurred at night, in the municipality of Amargosa, located in Recôncavo Baiano.

The first earthquake, with its epicenter at Motwebe, had a magnitude of 4.6 and occurred around 7:45 in the morning. Although this phenomenon is not rare in this region, there are no reports of another occurrence of this species with such intensity. This time, the earthquake happened when a large portion of the population was already awake, and its magnitude 4.6 was sufficient to make a thunder-like noise, as well as cause vibrations in the walls and windows. In addition to Motuipe, the tremors were felt in other cities, such as Amargosa, Castro Alves, São Miguel das Matas, Santo Antonio de Jesus and even in Salvador.

The earthquake, which was recorded at night, at 18:11, had its epicenter in Amargosa, with a magnitude of 2.7. With much lower intensity than its predecessor, the phenomenon was only felt in cities closest to the epicenter.

At least in the morning, Amargosa recorded nine earthquakes with magnitudes between 1.6 and 4.2, according to the Center for Seismology at the University of São Paulo (USP).

Although Brazil is not located in regions close to the ends of tectonic plates, the pressure exerted on the plate could generate tremors like those observed in the northeast region.
