Strong earthquake hits northern Chile, causing damage

Officials said a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern Chile, causing damage and prompting some people to evacuate as a precaution. The aftershock reached 6.3 and was followed within half an hour.

The first earthquake occurred at 12:09 a.m. local time on Tuesday and its epicenter was about 40 kilometers northwest of Karizal Bajo, a village in the northern Atacama region, or 113 kilometers southwest of Copiapo. This was followed by an aftershock at 12:30 in the morning

The Chilean Seismological Agency said the initial earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0 and hit about 31 km below the sea floor, making it a shallow earthquake. Measurement of aftershock 6.1. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) rated the amount at 6.8 and 6.3, respectively.
