Simulations show a tsunami from a 9.0 earthquake that struck Grey’s Harbor, and Yalapa Bay

New tsunami simulations show which parts of Port Grays and Wellaba Bay could experience severe flooding from a magnitude 9 earthquake off the coast.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released a series of tsunami simulations last week that show the impact of the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake on Port Grace and Willapa Bay.

Cascadia Subduction extends in the western region from British Columbia to Northern California. The last time they triggered a major earthquake was 320 years ago, causing a tsunami that inundated coastal communities.

DNR hopes the new simulations will help emergency planners and communities prepare for a potential disaster. The agency has produced static risk maps as well as simulations of the entire Washington coast, but DNR hopes these detailed simulations will help people better understand local impacts.

The new simulation shows the areas of Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay that could be underwater from a tsunami and when floods might occur by modeling wave heights for eight hours after the initial earthquake.

Simulations of Port Grays show parts of Aberdeen, Cosmopolis and Ocosta that could be under several feet of water when the tsunamis subsided. In the Willapa Bay region, South Bend and Tokland will be among the hardest hit, and most of the Long Beach Peninsula may experience some flooding.

A second series of simulations model the wave velocity to show residents how fast the waves could hit the shore.

Last year, DNR released a similar tsunami simulation for Bellingham, Anacortes and San Juan Islands.
