Several landmarks in Christchurch will be lit this week to mark the 10th anniversary of the first major earthquake in Canterbury.

The first earthquake – measuring 7.1 magnitude – occurred in the early hours of September 4, 2010, near Darfield. Between then and December 2011, Christchurch was hit by four major earthquakes and thousands of aftershocks – the most damaging on February 22, 2011, killing 185 people.

New Brighton Pier, New Regent St Shops, Town Hall Ferrier Fountain, Vaka a Hina Sculpture in the East Frame, Fanfare Sculpture in Chaney’s Corner, Christchurch Airport, and State Highway 1 Memorial Bridge will all be lit green on Thursdays and Fridays.

Christchurch City Council’s Director of Civil and International Relations Matt Nichols said an event that was initially to be held to commemorate the anniversary but has been canceled due to alert level 2 restrictions.

“Instead, we will celebrate the anniversary by lighting up some of the city’s landmarks in green – the color associated with growth and renewal,” he said.

Nichols said he hopes those contemplating the remembrance will reflect on how much has been achieved since the earthquake and how “brave and caring Christchurch residents” support each other.

More memorial events are planned for February 22 next year but will depend on whether the city is subject to any Covid-19 restrictions. More information about these events will be published on the council’s website in the coming months.
