The EQC has been described as arrogant and discriminatory, despite high-profile promises of a changing organization.

Mel Burke, who was previously a member of the EQC Customer Reference Group and ran the EQC Fix, a group formed to monitor EQC and assist claimants, said major reforms were still missing.

EQC was the subject of a compelling report after the Canterbury earthquakes.

Burke said the government should open the earthquake court to all claimants, require the EQC to fund independent engineering reports, the organization sign the New Zealand Fair Insurance Act, and form an independent client group.

Insurance attorney John Goddard agreed that those without the money or access to advocacy were severely affected by the process.

He said it was made worse by the EQC’s return to taking a tougher stance on legal issues.

Burke said the government needs to solve the problems properly, otherwise there will be similar results in natural disasters in the future.
