Bay of Plenty: 280 aftershocks were recorded following the 5.2-magnitude earthquake at sea

Major aftershocks include a 4.6-magnitude earthquake on Saturday evening and a 4.7-magnitude earthquake Sunday morning, both of which were felt in the Bay of Plenty and Auckland areas.

Ristau said that the region’s regular “earthquake swarms” are responsible for the ongoing activity.

“The Bay of Plenty and the coastal region directly in the south – like Tauranga and Wakatani – regularly have what we call earthquake swarms.”

Usually when there is a major earthquake, the tremor produces smaller aftershocks than the “main shock”. Restau said the largest aftershock is about one unit smaller than the main earthquake.

However, in a swarm, several larger earthquakes of the same magnitude will occur, rather than a major shock.

“The largest earthquakes in an earthquake swarm are usually of 6 degrees or less,” he said.

“Earthquake swarms can produce many of these medium-sized earthquakes and many smaller earthquakes, and they can last for days, weeks, or even months.”

Although Ristau urges the people of the Bay of Plenty to always stay alert, he said earthquakes are typical of seismic activity in the area and “don’t worry.”

He advised, citing a similar magnitude 5.2 Edgecomb earthquake in 1987 that caused widespread damage, “however, given that the Bay of Plenty is very seismically active, it is a good reminder to residents to always be prepared for the possibility of a devastating earthquake.” However, that tremor occurred on the shore.
