Earthquakes get smaller as LAFC attempts to roll

San Jose Earthquakes are looking to leave Greater Los Angeles with at least one victory when they face Los Angeles FC on Wednesday night.

Earthquakes (2-2-2, eight points) won three matches and scored 12 goals in a surprise round through the MLS is Back Championship in July, but were knocked out in the quarter-finals. Their first game in four weeks was against the Los Angeles Galaxy, a 3–2 loss on Saturday in Carson, California.

San Jose had been scheduled to play at home against Portland Timbers last Wednesday, but the match was postponed amid players’ protests over police shooting of Jacob Blake and racial inequality. So Wednesday’s earthquakes are set to begin their second of six matches in 20 days, with the postponed match rescheduled.

Some young Quakes have gained valuable Galaxy game experience, notably 16-year-old Cady Cowell, who started and scored his first goal in MLS.

“Based on what I’ve seen in the training, I think it is time to use young people, especially in these types of games that will develop them as good professionals,” coach Matthias Almeida told the San Jose Mercury News. “With the season remaining, I’ll try things.”

16 goals scored by LAFC in seven matches is the second most in the league, with Diego Rossi as MLS captain with seven goals. But LAFC (2-2-3, nine points) also conceded 15 goals, and entered the Wednesday game with straight losses.

The last setback was by counting 3-1 at the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.

“We have a lot of players who are not in good shape, and mentally they are not where they should be,” coach Bob Bradley said shortly after the loss in Seattle.

Bradley said the team’s performance has dipped in some training since LAFC returned from the MLS bubble in Florida.
