Japanese citizens help reopen Linwood Arts

Japanese citizens living on islands devastated by atomic bombs in WWII came together to produce the focal point for the reopening of Linwood Arts at the Eastside Gallery in memory of the September earthquake.

The “aftershocks” mark the 10th anniversary of the September 4 earthquake, created by Christchurch artist Valerie Campbell, who was spurred by the Japanese who folded 9,000 paper cranes, a process that began after the February 2011 earthquake.

“Crane is admired in Japan because they live up to 75 years, and because they find a partner with whom they mate for life,” Campbell said.

“Folding cranes is a meditative activity. They are tied together in long chains of interlocking shapes to make senbazuru, which looks like colorful streamers when they’re grouped together.”

Since the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end World War II, Senbazuru has become a symbol of hope and peace – the two cities display them on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu respectively at the commemoration.

Residents of Kagashima (Kyushu) and Christchurch’s sister city of Kurashiki (Honshu) fold their Sinbazuru for exhibition at the Linwood Arts Gallery at Linwood Arts on Worcester Street.

Campbell, who was living in Japan in 2011, said the gesture was particularly influential as production continued after the earthquake and tsunami that struck parts of Japan in March of that year.

She presented the paper cranes before her return to New Zealand and will distribute them to visitors at the exhibition, which will run until September 19.

The exhibition also displays the work of local artists Jodi Rogers, Sandra Biltman, Sue Healy, Vive Nixon, Stephen Sorer, Shelley Valentine, Dorothy Shrimpton and Ray Manson.
