IIT Roorkee establishes a chair to honor professors of earthquake engineering

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Rorky established the Institute Chair position in honor of the late Professor Anand Swarup Arya on the occasion of the first anniversary of his death on the 1st of September.

The engineering scholar recognizes Arya as a “Raraavis” whose pioneering contributions in the fields of structural engineering, earthquake engineering, disaster mitigation and management have made him a legend in his life.

According to a statement from the institute, Arya has been with IIT Roorkee for 36 years in the past 36 years and has built the reputation of being a teacher with distinction. During his tenure, he has offered several specialized courses to train professionals in the diverse aspects of seismic engineering at Rorky University and many other institutions in India and abroad. He is the author or co-author of numerous papers and many books, many of which were written after his retirement. The unique feature of his approach as a professional has been to design innovative and appropriate practical solutions while addressing complex structural problems despite an uncertain ecosystem.

Professor Arya has received numerous national and international awards and honors for his distinguished academic, research and professional contributions. The United Nations awarded him the most popular DHA-Sasakawa Disaster Prevention Award in 1997. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2002. He was awarded by the University of Illinois and IIT Roorkee Distinguished Graduate Awards.

Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director of the Institute, said: “A. AS Arya was truly a legend who guided earthquake engineering and disaster management efforts throughout his life. IIT Roorkee is very proud of his contributions, both as a graduate and as a faculty member.”

The chair was created through a donation pledged by Kaushalya Devi Arya and his wife and children Arun, Poonam, Anjali and Anshuli so that Arya’s professional contributions continue to inspire future generations.
