This week marks the 75th anniversary of the official end of World War II, when Japan signed a deed of unconditional surrender. The 6-year global conflict ended, the deadliest in human history, taking the lives of more than 80 million people and changing the lives of hundreds of millions more. This week some of our BBC News colleagues are recounting their families ’experiences to help people in their war effort. Huw Edwards recounts the experiences of his paternal grandfather John Daniel Edwards – a sea merchant who, along with thousands of other people, risked his life in the Atlantic Convoys.
