Sunland Add Emergency Trailer | The Squim Newspaper

Seeking to make their community safer during the worst possible scenarios, members of the 4 Sunland Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) along with members of the Sunland Owners Association (SLOA) worked together to bring an emergency trailer to help neighbors in need.

“It is for the safety and security of our people in the event of the Cascadia earthquake,” said Susan Persman, captain of CERT 4 team in Sunland.

Scientists expect the Cascadia earthquake to reach a seismic magnitude of 9.0 followed by a tsunami that is expected to hit the Olympic Peninsula due to plate change in the Cascadia subduction zone.

Pressman said they could use the trailer as a home base to support residents of 900 homes in Sunland with light search and rescue, first aid and more.

Blaine Zechenelly, Disaster Planning / EMT for Clallam County Fire District 3, said the trailer is part of its strategy to get emergency trailers for all 15 CERTs from Gardiner to Deer Park.

“If we lose the roads, this becomes a point where the community can really go,” he said. “Even if the phones and the roads break down. That’s so you can see what’s going on. Touch the base here first.”

Sunland is the third community to host a trailer for CERT with one in Diamond Point and the other in Gardiner. It is a fourth plan for a private home in Agnew, Zechenelly said.

Sunland board members said they have worked with Sunland Residents, CERTs, and Community Development Officers in Clallam County for about two years in logistics and acquiring structure and permits for it.

David Walp, SLOA’s Acting President, said they paid about $ 3,000 from the Spokane reuse container company and donate its use to CERT “because it benefits everyone.”

Board colleagues Bob Eichhorn and Phil Merlin helped with the process, saying it was a trip to get the trailer here.

Eichhorn said the trailer permitting process was a learning experience for Homeowners Association and Clallam County Community Development employees but they appreciate everyone’s efforts.

With its location close to the Sunland main office, he said they “wanted to make sure it was not ugly to the eye, yet easy to get to.”

If a major earthquake occurs, Merlin said they expect many of the neighbors to head north in the tsunami zone towards them as well.

For now, Sunland’s CERT team is looking to equip the trailer with racks before bringing in communications equipment and supplies, such as blankets and stretchers, Zechenelly said.

CERT 4 Sunland has about 22 people taking part in training each month for emergency preparedness. Each of the fifteen emergency response teams ranges from 20 to 40 trained members in the Squim Area.
