Tsunamis occur most often when a major earthquake occurs under the ocean or near shore, forcing seawater upward in a wave that grows as it propagates over shallow water, according to the DNR. Tsunami-generating earthquakes are usually 7.0 degrees or higher and are concentrated less than 62 miles below the Earth’s surface.

The new simulations use a magnitude 9.0 earthquake as a trigger event, which then triggers a tsunami that can travel up to 500 mph above water and collide with waves up to 20 feet high. Coastal areas, in turn, would have already declined due to the earthquake.

The last earthquake of this magnitude struck the Cascadia subduction zone in 1700, according to the Pacific Northwest Earthquakes Network. Geological evidence shows that such large earthquakes have occurred in the region at least seven times in the past 3,500 years, or roughly every 400 to 600 years.

Officials hope the simulation will be a wake-up call to local governments and residents.
