The farmers had no idea there was a fault line in their backyard – until the earthquake struck

Edson Guadgenen was asleep peacefully when the earthquake woke him “loudly and an angry roar”.

He was sleeping on a Holland farmhouse near the epicenter of a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on September 4, 2010.

Edson Guadgenen, pictured with his partner Amanda, says he believed the world was ending when the September 4, 2010 earthquake struck.

But before the earthquake struck at 4.35 am that morning, at a shallow depth of 10.46 kilometers, neither he nor the farm owners John and Alison Gray had any idea there was a crack in their backyard.

Brazilian-born Guadagnin, who worked on a farm, had never had an earthquake before.

“I thought it was the end of the world,” he said this week.

His co-worker and friend, Brazilian Philippe Casagrande, was riding a quad bike on the farm, amidst 500 terrified cows, when the earthquake struck.

Casagrande recalls the quad bike headlights that revealed hundreds of terrifying cows scrambling and falling into the darkness around him as the ground shook under their feet.

In this dim light, he saw the ground cracking and cracking around him.

Farm managers Amanda and Edson Guadgenin. Edson was at Selwyn Farm at the epicenter of the September 2010 earthquake.

“I thought there was something wrong with my bike at first,” Kasagrande said. “I knew when I came to New Zealand that there might be earthquakes … I hadn’t felt them before that day.”

Allison and John Gray got up from a bed at Holland’s Farm and huddled together until the shaking stopped.

“It was a grave hazard,” Alison Gray told Stuff nine years ago, “but the house was surprisingly fine given how close it was to the epicenter, only 3 kilometers away.”

There is little evidence of an earthquake left on the farm except for the joking power column.

Miraculously, some pictures remained on the walls.

Tall and slender, the Greendale Fault “pretty much” ran directly under the farm’s milking shed and raised its platform off the ground.

As the sun rose on that day, the Grays, who moved to New Zealand from England in 2003, discovered a “surreal” landscape.

There were big cracks in their fields, the road outside their home had developed “crooked,” the electricity poles were tilting randomly, and they could tell where the fault line splits because “the ground had been raised.”

The September 2010 earthquake caused train tracks to curve and break by the railroad near Rolleston.

“It was really tough in those early weeks,” said Alison Gray. “There was no electricity or water … but now I think we were generally lucky that we had no waiting for insurance or anything like other friends after the February 2011 earthquake.”

A decade later, the road outside Grindal’s ranch is still twisting, the power poles are still tilting and waiting to be repaired, but all the visible traces of the fault line have vanished from the rolling fields, and are tempered by human intervention.

Gray, a psychiatrist who was studying for a PhD at the time, said she suffered from loud noises for nearly four years and through “thousands of aftershocks.”

“Anytime I heard anything like this rumble, whether it was a truck or a plane, or any similar noise, my body would get tense even before I was aware of it,” she said. “ With each aftershock you get nervous and wonder if it’s only going to get worse. ”

Guadagnin said he noticed a change in the behavior of the cows.

“All the cows look big, but they are very sensitive,” he said.

“ After that, they didn’t like to go back to the place they were when they fell. ”

John and Alison Gray’s farm is on Greendale’s fault.

Alison and John Gray still own the Holland Ranch but live in Springfield.

Guadagnin and his wife Amanda, a student at the University of Canterbury, met when she traveled from Brazil in 2011 to work on the farm. They married in 2015 and now run Holland’s farm.

Casagrande runs another farm that Grays owns.

“We’ve all stuck together since the earthquake,” said John Gray. I think that’s the biggest thing that has come out of it. ”

Homebush, one of Canterbury’s oldest residences, was not far from the center of Darfield and was badly damaged.

“You’d never know the fault line now exists,” said Alison Gray. “Unless you knew where to look … now it looks like a normal field.

“I heard recently that the fault line bursts every 18,000 years, which we hope means we’ll never see our fields like them again.”
