Tonight, a powerful but deep earthquake struck the South Island, centered about 90 km southwest of Nelson.

People felt an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale after it struck at 10.13 pm on September 3, about 10 kilometers west of St. Arnaud and 62 kilometers deep. Source: Provider

The magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck at 10.13 pm, with a depth of 62 km and about 10 km west of Saint-Arnaud, according to GeoNet.

More than 25,000 kiwis on the Upper South Island and Lower North Island reported feeling vibration, as they largely reported slight or moderate shaking.

The earthquake is rated “strong” by GeoNet.

The Wellington Prime Minister’s Home, which currently houses Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, her partner Clark Gifford and their daughter Nev, was one of the buildings that was shaken by the earthquake.

“Quiiiiiite the old Brim’s house creaked during those good vibrations, and it sure released the birds nesting in our roof,” Gifford wrote on Twitter, adding, “I hope everyone is okay.”

The tremor prompted a reminder from the National Emergency Management Agency for people to drop, cover and hold any aftershocks.

Fire and Emergency NZ told 1 NEWS that there are no immediate reports of damage.
