Florida earthquake struck on Thursday. How often does that happen?

Amidst the historically active hurricane season, Florida was hit by another bend of Mother Nature on Thursday: a 4-magnitude earthquake straddling the state border.

While there were no reports of damage or injuries, according to the Escampia Provincial Police Office, hundreds of people reported that they felt the earthquake. It happened more than 6 miles below the surface, according to the geological survey, and was the first of the year in the state.

Earthquakes in Florida are mostly confined to the Panhandle, according to Don Blackman, a geophysicist with the Geological Survey.

But last year, Florida was at the epicenter of a larger earthquake anomaly. From March 6 to April 12, 2019, there were nine earthquakes that rocked the northern part of the state – to the bewilderment of experts. However, none of those earthquakes were as strong as Thursday’s earthquakes.

“It ranged between 1.9 and 3.1,” Blackman said. “It was much smaller than the one there today.”

Blackman said Florida doesn’t see many earthquakes because the state is not on a tectonic plate boundary, unlike places like Alaska, Japan or Chile. The movement of the plates stresses the interior, which is likely to cause Thursday’s earthquake.

Blackman said most earthquakes in Florida are too small to cause significant damage. But he also wouldn’t be surprised if on Thursday the people who lived near the epicenter fell off the shelves. He said it was unlikely the damage would extend further into the state.

“Nobody in Florida should worry about earthquakes,” Blackman said. “Frankly, it is not a seismically active region at all.”

In general, the eastern United States is not very prone to strong earthquakes, although in rare cases, earthquakes have caused damage in eastern Mississippi.

In 2004, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Washington Monument. An earthquake in Charleston, South Carolina in 1886 destroyed much of the city, according to the Geological Survey website.

While it didn’t hit Florida directly, a number of Florida residents also felt a 7.7-magnitude earthquake near Jamaica in January.
