The simulations show how a tsunami could submerge the coast of Washington state

Using a hypothetical large earthquake off the coast of Washington, a new batch of simulations show why it’s so important to head quickly to higher ground.

The Washington Department of Natural Resources recently released simulations that show how a powerful tsunami would overwhelm the state’s coastal and coastal communities if a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck along the Cascadia subduction zone.

“There is no earthquake season,” Corina Allen, Senior Hazard Geologist at DNR told Q13FOX. “It could happen today, and it could happen tomorrow or 50 years from now.”

The simulations show that there are some locations across the state where residents will have very little time – if any – to escape the onslaught of floodwater due to the speed of the wave.

In the videos, the primary wave could hit the outer coast of the state within 15 to 20 minutes after the ground begins to vibrate and the earthquake causes a tsunami.

“The warm colors in the simulations, the deep waves are high tsunamis 10 feet or more,” Allen said.

Geologists have produced local simulations of eight coastal communities, saying that the Grays Harbor and Welapa Bays will be hit the hardest, with significant inundation in low-lying coastal communities.

“We recommend people to plan their evacuation routes and know where the ground will rise and how to reach it, but also if you don’t have a vertical evacuation structure, some of the only options are to reach the roof or top of a nearby building in the hope that the building can survive the earthquake and tsunami,” Allen told Q13FOX.

While coastal areas can see impacts in as little as 30 minutes, densely populated areas like Seattle will see the arrival of the wave about two hours and 20 minutes after the initial earthquake. Tacoma will see the effects about 20 minutes from Seattle, while Olympia will see the arrival of the wave in four hours.

But the DNR report notes that tsunamis are “multi-wave events” that can affect regions “for several hours to probable days” after the initial earthquake.

Allen told Q13FOX this is why it is not safe to leave your safe place after the first wave.

“You will see continuous wave movement along the outer coast, and then you can see the wavefront spreading down the Strait of Juan de Fuca and dividing around Port Townsend and heading north to Bellingham and the San Juan Islands and then heading south down the Hood Channel in Seattle, Tacoma and then down to Olympia,” Be warned.

Besides the tsunami approaching, the country will also deal with any damage caused by the earthquake, including impacts on vital buildings and infrastructure, such as roads outside vulnerable areas.

The Cascadia subduction zone produces a large earthquake every 300 to 600 years. It has been 320 years since the last magnitude 9 earthquake struck in 1700.

In 2016, federal officials conducted a massive earthquake and tsunami drill in the Pacific Northwest on the premise of a magnitude 9.0 earthquake 95 miles off the coast of Oregon that triggered a tsunami.

And those exercises predicted that such a major disaster would result in mass casualties, including 1,100 killed in the earthquake, 13,000 killed in the tsunami, and 24,000 wounded.
