A village in Perthshire was hit by the largest earthquake in nearly a decade.

Blackford residents reported that they heard a loud boom as the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 1.3, struck at 3.29 pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Located south of the boundary fault line in the highlands, it is believed to be one of the worst hit areas since 2011. Another 1.3 earthquake struck the village in 2015.

Data from the British Geological Survey (BGS) showed that Wednesday’s event occurred 8 kilometers underground, with the epicenter located just one mile north of the Gleneagles Hotel.

While employees of the luxury hotel said they did not notice the earthquake, locals in Blackford reported a “mild to moderate tremor,” according to the BGS.

Local distillery worker Andrew Simpson was enjoying a day off when the earthquake struck.

He said he initially thought the noise was due to work on building a side railroad at the Highland Spring Factory.

The 56-year-old said, “I was sitting having a cup of tea and suddenly the whole house shook.

I thought, ‘What the hell is this? I initially thought he was working for the Railroad in Highland Spring but then I saw on Facebook that an earthquake was recorded, and so I knew what it was.

“It was a shock. When I was young, we used to have a lot of them, but not much lately. It’s the biggest I can remember.”

Community Council member Catherine Hoggett holds data recording every earthquake in the area since 1608.

She said the region has seen a decrease in seismic activity in the past 10 years.

“I was sitting in front of my computer, thinking about my own business, and I heard a loud bang,” she said.

“We’ve had a lot of them in the past but this is the first one I’ve heard in 10 years – they calmed down about 10 years ago.

“That was 1.3, and it’s very unusual for us to have it that big but we had a bigger one – at least 2.4.”

The Blackford earthquake comes just three months after Comrie, famous for its tremors, shook with a magnitude 2.2 earthquake at 3.22 pm on June 6.

The town, nicknamed Shaky Toun, is home to the Earthquake House, which was built in 1869 as an earthquake monitoring center and is now a local tourist attraction.

Statistics for 2016 showed that Perthshire had an earthquake every 12 weeks for about two years.

Between January 2015 and November 2016, the region experienced eight earthquakes, while Scotland as a whole was hit by 146 earthquakes, double the usual frequency.

Earthquakes occur when blocks of rocks in the planet’s crust move against each other, often along fault lines.

One of the major lines in Scotland is the Highland Boundary Fault, which divides Perthshire on its way from Isle of Aran to Stonehaven.
