A commitment to stopping TB in children, adolescents and families

Ahead of the 73rd UN General Assembly, UNICEF, WHO and the TB Stop Partnership were a domestic event that demonstrated commitment and accelerated action to stop TB in children, adolescents and families. Sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, the Danish Ministry of Health, the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations, the Alliance Against TB, Louder Than TB, the Action Task Force, Unitaid, the Global Fund, USAID, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Foundation AIDS, JHPIEGO, Union, KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation and Every Woman Every Child, the event aimed to show commitment and accelerate action to combat TB in children, adolescents and families. Leaders and people affected by tuberculosis discussed the importance of targeted commitments to children and adolescents. During the event, a new roadmap for TB control in children and adolescents was launched.

The event was opened by Stefan Peterson (Head of Health, UNICEF Head of Quarters), Teresa Kasaeva (Director of the Global Tuberculosis Program, WHO) and Lucica Ditiu (Executive Director, Stop TB Partnership). They highlighted the current global epidemiology of TB in children and adolescents, the progress made since the publication of the Childhood Tuberculosis Road Map and the remaining gaps in the detection, prevention and integration of child and adolescent services.

The first panel, moderated by Stefan Peterson, focused on TB in children and adolescents, with contributions from Eric Goosby (UN Special Envoy for Tuberculosis), Junye Nakano (Minister, Japan Permanent Mission to the United Nations) and Farhan Amanullah (Labor) the Presidents, Children and Adolescents Group Against TB Partnership to Stop Tuberculosis).

Kristine East spoke about her experiences with TB in her family, which influenced her young son Jackson and several other family members in the United States. She spoke about delays in diagnosis as well as the experiences of families with TB-related stigma.

Teresa Kasaeva and all TB people present have launched an updated TB Stop Road Map for children and adolescents, including TB PROOF representatives, the Jackson family and Jeff Acaba, TB survivors from the Philippines. The Plan represents an important moment for consolidation and advancement of advocacy, commitment, resource mobilization and joint efforts of all stakeholders to address the burden of TB among children and adolescents. It recommends ten key activities to improve TB services and rescue tens of thousands of children and adolescents from TB, including those infected with both TB and HIV.

During the second panel, moderated by tuberculosis survivor Jeff Acaba, ministers of health and representatives of donor and partner organizations explained their obligations to overcome TB in children, adolescents and families. The list of experts includes Isaac Adewole (Minister of Health, Nigeria), Ellen Trane Nørby (Minister of Health, Denmark), Janet Ginnard (Team Leader, Strategy, Unitaid), Irene Koek (Deputy Assistant Administrator, USAID), Osamu Kunii (Head of Strategy). Investment and Impact, Global Fund), Kitty van Weezenbeek (Chief Executive Officer of the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation) and José Luis Castro (Executive Director of the Union).
